Leg Cramps During Pregnancy: Why They Happen at Night and How to Stop Them

Leg cramps during pregnancy are extremely common affecting approximately 40-50% of pregnant women, usually occurring in the second and third trimesters, and almost always at night.

It is 2 am. You are finally asleep. And then an agonising cramp shoots through your calf muscle. You cannot straighten your leg. You gasp awake. Your partner is confused. You are in pain.

Hydration

Aim for 8-10 glasses of water or fluids daily. Include coconut water, nimbu paani, and dal/sabzi-based liquids. Reduce caffeine (chai, coffee) it is a mild diuretic that worsens dehydration.

A simple 5-minute calf stretch routine before sleeping reduces nighttime cramp frequency significantly. How to do it:

Avoid prolonged standing or sitting

If your job involves long hours on your feet, try to rest with legs elevated for 15-20 minutes in the afternoon. If you sit at a desk, take a short walk every hour to keep blood circulating.
