6 Weeks Pregnant: First Ultrasound, Heartbeat & What's Normal for Indian Mothers

What if there is no heartbeat? What if I cannot see anything on the scan? This guide answers those questions honestly and with care.

Week 6 is often the most emotionally charged week of early pregnancy. It is the week when most women in India find out they are pregnant –and it is the week when, for many, the first ultrasound happens. Hearing (or seeing) that tiny heartbeat for the first time is unforgettable.

But week 6 also brings some of the biggest worries: What if there is no heartbeat? What if I cannot see anything on the scan? This guide answers those questions honestly and with care.

Baby Development at 6 Weeks Pregnant

Your baby is now approximately 4–6mm long –about the size of a lentil. Despite being barely visible to the naked eye, enormous development is happening:

6 Weeks Pregnant Symptoms: What You Are Likely Feeling

Morning Sickness (Now in Full Force)

If nausea had not arrived yet, it often does by week 6. For many women, this is the most difficult week of the first trimester symptom-wise. The good news: it almost always eases significantly by week 12–14.

Breast Changes –Tenderness, Darkening, and Swelling

By week 6, breast tenderness is usually noticeable. You may also notice:

Frequent Urination

Still increasing. Your kidneys are processing 50% more blood than before pregnancy –the bathroom is your new best friend.

Heightened Sense of Smell and Food Aversions

Food aversions in early pregnancy are extremely common at week 6. Many Indian women report suddenly hating the smell of:

This is your oestrogen at work. It is temporary and will ease. Eat whatever you can tolerate in the meantime –nutrition comes second to just eating something.

6 Weeks Pregnant Ultrasound: What to Expect

The 6-week ultrasound is often your first glimpse of your baby. Here is what to know:

What Type of Ultrasound?

At 6 weeks, a transvaginal ultrasound (where the probe is inserted internally) gives a much clearer image than an abdominal scan. Do not be alarmed –it is safe and painless, and it is the standard approach at this stage in India.

No Heartbeat at 6 Weeks –Should You Worry?

This is the question that sends many Indian mothers into a spiral of anxiety. Here is an honest, compassionate answer:

Not seeing a heartbeat at exactly 6 weeks does not automatically mean something is wrong. Here is why:

Your doctor will likely recommend a repeat ultrasound in 1–2 weeks if no heartbeat is seen at 6 weeks. Try to hold the anxiety –this waiting period, as painful as it is, often resolves with good news.

When to be concerned: If hCG levels are not rising, if there is heavy bleeding, or if the gestational sac appears empty well past 7 weeks, your doctor will guide you on next steps.

Prenatal Care Schedule in India: What Happens When?

Many Indian mothers wonder: how many doctor visits are needed and when? Here is the standard antenatal care schedule recommended for India:

Under the Government of India's PMSMA scheme, all pregnant women registered at government facilities receive free antenatal check-ups, medicines, and ultrasounds on the 9th of every month at designated centres.
