Twelve weeks. You made it.
If your first trimester felt like running a marathon through fog with nausea, exhaustion, anxiety, and a secret you have been carrying — week 12 marks the finish line. Not the end of pregnancy, but a very real turning point. For most women, the worst is now behind them.
Here is everything that changes from week 12 onwards, and why this is genuinely a week worth celebrating.
Your baby at 12 weeks: fully formed and growing fast
Your baby is now approximately 58–61mm long the size of a lime or a large fig. At the 12-week scan, you will see a baby that looks unmistakably human with a proper head, body, arms, legs, fingers, and toes.
All major organs are formed and working together
Reflexes are developing your baby can open and close fingers and make sucking movements
The digestive system is beginning to practice your baby swallows amniotic fluid
Bone is continuing to replace soft cartilage across the skeleton
The sex organs are formed, though the sex may not yet be visible on scan
Your baby's brain is growing rapidly approximately 250,000 neurons are being produced every minute

For most women, nausea and vomiting begin improving significantly from week 12 onwards. This is because hCG levels which drive nausea start to plateau and then decline after their week 10 peak. The placenta also takes over progesterone production now, and your body adjusts.
Around 90% of women see morning sickness improve by 14 weeks. If yours does not, speak to your doctor there are safe medications available.
The crushing fatigue of the first trimester typically eases from week 12-13. Many women describe a genuine surge of energy entering the second trimester the so-called "honeymoon trimester." Enjoy it and use it.
Your bump starts to become visible
Your uterus has grown above your pelvic bone by week 12. First-time mothers typically notice their bump becoming visible from weeks 12-16. For women who have been pregnant before, the bump may show earlier.
Miscarriage risk drops dramatically
By week 12, miscarriage risk falls to approximately 1% or below. Approximately 80% of all miscarriages happen before week 12. Reaching this milestone is a genuine statistical turning point which is why it is the traditional time to announce a pregnancy.

The 12-week scan: what to expect
The 12-week scan (also called the dating scan or first-trimester scan) is usually the most exciting moment of the first trimester. Here is what the sonographer will check:
CRL (Crown-Rump Length) to confirm your due date accurately
Heartbeat strong and reassuring
Number of babies (yes, this is when twins are sometimes first discovered!)
NT measurement if the NT scan was not done separately
Basic anatomy check brain, spine, abdominal wall, arms and legs
Position of the placenta
Tip: This is one scan your partner should absolutely try to attend. For many couples, this is the first time pregnancy becomes completely real.
When and how to announce your pregnancy in India
Week 12 is the most common time to announce a pregnancy and for good reason. Here is a framework that works for Indian families:
Your parents and in-laws: Many Indian families expect to be among the first to know. Having the conversation in person, if possible, makes it more special.
Close siblings and trusted friends who have been your support during the first trimester
Your employer or HR: Legally, you do not have to disclose pregnancy until 7 months in India but informing your manager around week 12-16 is practical for workload planning. Under the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act 2017, you are entitled to 26 weeks of paid maternity leave.
A simple family WhatsApp group message with a scan photo classic and heartfelt
A mithai (sweet) box gifted to grandparents-to-be with a note tucked inside
A mehendi (henna) design that includes baby-themed elements for a photoshoot
Frame the scan photo and hand it to family in person their reactions are priceless

Begin thinking about your diet second trimester nutritional needs are higher
If you have not already, consider sharing your pregnancy with your employer to understand your maternity benefits
