Holi 2027 Preparation Checklist -Everything to Plan, Buy and Organise Before the Colours Fly

A complete Holi 2027 preparation guide covering everything to buy, organise, and plan for a safe, colourful, and memorable celebration with family.

Holi is the most spontaneous-feeling festival in the Indian calendar. But the best Holi mornings are actually the best-prepared ones. The colours are sorted. The thandai is made. The white clothes are set aside. The children know the rules. The rangoli is done. And then -and only then -can you abandon yourself completely to the chaos.

Holi 2027 -Key Dates for Planning

Date

What to Have Done

By 1 March (3 weeks before)

Natural colours ordered online, thandai ingredients stocked, guest list confirmed

By 8 March (2 weeks before)

Holi puja samagri purchased, gujiya preparation started or ordered, white clothes gathered

By 15 March (1 week before)

White outfits ready, safety items organised, children briefed on consent and colour rules

21 March evening (Holika Dahan)

Puja performed at community bonfire, prayers offered, Prahlad-Holika story told

22 March morning (Holi)

6–10 AM: the main colour play. Celebrate, feast, rest

3 WEEKS BEFORE -Week of 1 March 2027

Colours -The Most Important Decision

The colours you choose matter -for your skin, your children's skin, and India's water bodies.

  • Natural/organic gulal: made from flowers (marigold, rose, palash), turmeric, beetroot, indigo. Available on Amazon, Flipkart, and local organic stores. Order this week -stock depletes fast.
  • Avoid: synthetic colours with harsh chemicals (lead, chromium, asbestos -yes, these have been found in cheap Holi colours). A 2023 study found 40% of commercially available Holi colours contained heavy metals above safe limits.
  • Homemade natural colours: see the guide below -turmeric for yellow, beetroot for pink, indigo powder for blue, palash (flame of the forest) flowers for orange. These are the colours Holi was originally played with.
  • Water colour: for pichkaris, use only natural colours in the water. Synthetic dyes in water are harder to wash off, irritating for eyes, and damage drains.

Holika Dahan Puja Samagri

Cow dung cakes (upla) -for the bonfire fuel

Unripe barley or wheat stalks to roast in the bonfire

Coconut

Flowers for offering

Cotton thread (to circle the bonfire 3–7 times)

Kumkum and haldi

Diya and ghee

Mauli / sacred thread

Water in a copper vessel

2 WEEKS BEFORE -Week of 8 March 2027

Gujiya -Pre-Order or Make in Advance

  • Gujiya takes time to make and is eaten throughout Holi day -order from a trusted mithai shop or make a batch 2 days before and store in an airtight container
  • Thandai ingredients: whole milk, almonds, pistachios, melon seeds, rose petals, cardamom, saffron, black pepper, fennel, poppy seeds. Stock these this week.
  • If serving thandai with bhang: note this is legal only in specific states (UP, Rajasthan, etc.). Clearly label bhang thandai and never serve it without explicit consent. Never offer to children.

White Clothes -Gather This Week

  • White shows every colour -choose white cotton kurtas, old white salwar-kameez, or any light-coloured cotton
  • Set aside: one set per family member, including children. These are the 'Holi clothes' -not worn again to anything important
  • Apply mustard oil or coconut oil on skin and hair before playing -creates a barrier that makes colour significantly easier to wash off

1 WEEK BEFORE -Week of 15 March 2027

  • Brief children on colour consent: not everyone wants to play. Ask before applying colour to anyone's face. This is both respectful and a life skill worth teaching at Holi.
  • Gather safety items: protective glasses for children, earplugs if attending loud events, a bowl of coconut/mustard oil for pre-Holi skin protection
  • Prepare Holika Dahan puja: confirm community bonfire location, timing, what to bring
  • Plan the post-Holi meal -the kitchen is off-limits during morning colour play. Prepare it in advance or order.
  • Buy or make Holi gifts: natural colour sets, thandai boxes, dry fruit boxes, gujiya tin boxes -these are the most appreciated Holi gifts

Tip: Apply oil on your children's skin and hair the morning of Holi before they step outside. Coconut or mustard oil creates a protective barrier -even synthetic colours come off significantly more easily.
