How to Do Holika Dahan Puja at Home -Simple Steps, the Right Muhurat and What It Means (2027)

A complete Holika Dahan 2027 guide explaining puja steps, timings, samagri, rituals, and the spiritual significance of this sacred Holi tradition for families.

Holika Dahan is the quieter, more sacred half of Holi -and often the more meaningful one. While Rangwali Holi is about joy and mess and community, Holika Dahan is about prayer. About letting go. About remembering that the things we carry -old grievances, old fears, old habits -can be offered to the fire.

Holika Dahan Muhurat 2027

Holika Dahan Date: Sunday, 21 March 2027

Holika Dahan is performed after sunset during Pradosh Kaal

The bonfire must be lit after the Bhadra period ends -Bhadra is considered inauspicious for the ritual

Exact muhurat varies by city -confirm from Drikpanchang.com for your location

Community bonfires typically begin at approximately 8:30–9:00 PM -check your local temple or housing society for exact timing

Holika Dahan -What You Need and the Steps

What You Need

  • Unripe barley or wheat stalks (called 'jau' or fresh harvest) -offered to the fire as the first fruits of spring
  • Cow dung cakes (upla) -traditional bonfire fuel, adds the sacred element
  • Coconut, flowers, and unbroken grains -offerings to the fire
  • Sacred thread (mauli) -to circle the bonfire
  • Kumkum, haldi, water in a copper vessel for offering

The Steps

  • 1. Arrive at the community bonfire before lighting, or set up a small bonfire in your building compound or garden
  • 2. Circumambulate (walk around) the bonfire 3 or 7 times while holding the sacred thread, unwinding it around the wood as you walk -this is the pradakshina
  • 3. Offer barley, coconut, and flowers to the fire with prayers
  • 4. Chant: 'Om Holika Namah' or simply offer a sincere prayer: 'May everything that no longer serves me be released with this fire. May the new season bring clarity and joy.'
  • 5. Roast the barley stalks or wheat in the fire's warmth -this is the first taste of the spring harvest, and it is offered to Ganesha and Lakshmi before being eaten
  • 6. Take ash (bhasma) from the cooled bonfire the next morning and apply a small mark on the forehead -this is believed to carry the fire's protective energy

If You Cannot Access a Community Bonfire

  • A clay pot or fire-safe vessel with a small fire of wood and cow dung can serve as a home Holika Dahan
  • Alternatively: light a diya, offer the barley and flowers, and pray over it. The intention is the ritual.

Involving Children in Holika Dahan

  • Tell the Prahlad-Holika story before going to the bonfire -so they understand what they are watching
  • Let them circumambulate with you (holding your hand), or observe from a safe distance
  • Ask them: 'What is one thing from this year that you'd like to offer to the fire and let go of?' Even small children have an answer.
  • Roast the barley together over the fire (safely supervised) and eat it -this first taste of harvest is the most ancient part of the ritual
  • Next morning: show them the ash and explain: 'From fire, something new grows'
