Raksha Bandhan 2027 Preparation Checklist -Rakhi, Gifts, Puja Thali and the Plan

A complete Raksha Bandhan 2027 preparation guide with tips for choosing Rakhi, gifts, puja essentials, sweets, and organising a meaningful family celebration.

Raksha Bandhan is a single day -but the preparation makes it. The Rakhi ordered in advance. The puja thali arranged. The mithai bought or made. The gift chosen thoughtfully. This checklist organises it all so the morning of 17 August 2027 arrives with everything in place.

3 WEEKS BEFORE -Week of 27 July 2027

The Rakhi -Order Now

  • Handmade Rakhis from SHG women's groups and artisan cooperatives: available on Amazon, Flipkart, iTokri, and local craft stores. Buying from artisans means your Rakhi carries the work of a woman's hands -which feels right for this festival.
  • DIY Rakhi: making a Rakhi with your children in the week before is a deeply meaningful activity. Thread, beads, a small charm. A child who makes the Rakhi for her brother has participated fully in the festival's spirit.
  • Eco-friendly Rakhis: seed Rakhis (can be planted after the festival), cotton thread Rakhis, Rakhis that don't use plastic or non-biodegradable material
  • Quantity: order one per sibling + one to keep for the puja. Order extras for cousins and family friends if in your tradition.

Gifts -Decide This Week

  • From brother to sister: cash/envelope (most appreciated -she chooses what she actually wants), jewellery, useful item (bag, watch, device), plant or experiences
  • From sister to brother: the Rakhi itself is the primary gift, plus a sweet box or a homemade card from children
  • For children in the family: Rakhis for little brothers, small gifts for little sisters -books, art supplies, something they actually want

1 WEEK BEFORE -Week of 10 August 2027

Puja Thali -Assemble This

Rakhi (the thread to be tied)

Small diya with ghee and wick

Kumkum (for tilak on forehead)

Akshat (unbroken rice mixed with kumkum)

Mithai or chocolate (for feeding the brother after Rakhi)

Flowers for the thali

Yellow cloth or small mat to place the thali on

Small bowl of water (for purification)

Sweets and Mithai

  • Order or make: kaju barfi, besan ladoo, gulab jamun, or the sibling's specific favourite
  • A homemade sweet has more emotional weight on Raksha Bandhan than a bought box. Even a simple coconut ladoo made by a child for her brother changes the energy of the day.

THE DAY -17 August 2027 (Tuesday)

  • Both siblings bathe and wear new or clean clothes
  • After muhurat time: sister prepares the puja thali with diya, tilak materials, Rakhi, and mithai
  • Brother sits facing east. Sister performs aarti, applies tilak on forehead, ties the Rakhi on right wrist, offers mithai
  • Brother gives the gift and makes his promise of protection and care for the coming year
  • Sweets shared with the whole family

Tip: Let your daughter make one Rakhi with her hands -thread, beads, whatever she can manage. The act of making something for her brother, and him wearing something she made, is the festival at its most essential.

What is the most meaningful Rakhi you have ever tied or received?
