Is It Okay to Let AI Help With Your Child's Homework?

AI is becoming part of children’s education, but how they use it matters. This article explores healthy AI habits, practical homework rules, and ways parents can encourage learning instead of dependency.

India has the largest student population on ChatGPT globally. OpenAI confirmed this in 2024, noting that 'education has become the number one use case for ChatGPT in India, driven entirely by students from the ground up.' ChatGPT is now, for millions of Indian students, the first place they go when they are stuck on something.

This is happening regardless of what parents decide at home. The question is not whether your child will use AI - it is whether they will use it in ways that help them learn or ways that replace learning.

The Research on AI and Learning

A 2026 survey of 1,214 young people in the US found that most students who used AI for homework worried about its effects on their own critical thinking. The concern was not theoretical - teachers reporting on student work across the US, UK, and India consistently observe reduced ability to form independent arguments and increased dependency on retrieved answers.

A 2024 study in educational psychology found that students who used AI to complete assignments outperformed their peers on immediate tests - but significantly underperformed them on delayed assessments and novel problem-solving tasks. The AI had done the learning; the student had not.

Estonia is currently pioneering an approach that may be the answer: retraining AI tutors to ask questions rather than provide answers. The AI Socratic model - where the tool responds to 'what's the answer?' with 'what do you think?' and 'why?' - is showing promising early results in maintaining the student's cognitive engagement rather than replacing it.

A Practical Home Protocol for AI and Homework

  • Rule 1: Try it yourself first. AI is for after you've genuinely attempted the problem - not before.
  • Rule 2: AI explains, you do. If you use AI to understand a concept, you must then complete the related problem without AI assistance.
  • Rule 3: No AI for first drafts of writing. AI can review and suggest improvements to something you've written - not write the first version.
  • Rule 4: Tell the teacher when you've used AI - this is becoming school policy in many institutions and is simply ethical transparency.
  • Rule 5: Be able to explain what you submitted. If you cannot explain in your own words what you handed in, you have not learned it. This test catches AI-generated content reliably.

The question to ask your child after homework: 'Can you explain this to me?' If they can, the learning happened. If they cannot, it didn't - regardless of how good the homework looks. The explanation test is more reliable than any AI detection software.

How does your family handle AI and homework? Are you figuring this out in real time too?
