How to Make Natural Holi Colours at Home -Safe for Babies, Toddlers and Indian Skin (2027)

Create safe, natural Holi colours at home with simple ingredients while protecting babies, toddlers, and sensitive skin with chemical-free festival celebrations.

Holi with babies and toddlers is one of the most beautiful festival experiences -but also one that requires specific preparation. Synthetic colours can cause skin irritation, eye damage, and respiratory issues. The original Holi was played with colours made from the natural world. Here's how to return to that -cheaply, easily, and beautifully.

Why Synthetic Holi Colours Are a Problem -Especially for Children

  • A 2023 CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) study found lead, chromium, mercury, and asbestos fibres in 40% of commercially available Holi colours in India
  • Children's skin absorbs topical substances more readily than adults' -meaning the same colour is a higher risk on a 2-year-old than on a 30-year-old
  • Eyes: synthetic colour in eyes can cause conjunctivitis, corneal abrasion, and in severe cases permanent damage
  • Respiratory: inhaling fine synthetic colour powder causes immediate irritation and can trigger asthma attacks in sensitive children
  • For babies under 1 year: no colour at all -not even natural colour. Keep them wrapped and away from the colour play entirely

Safe Holi for Babies (0–2 Years)

  • 0–12 months: no colour, no participation in colour play. Dress baby in full-coverage light cotton. Keep away from the colour playing area. The festive energy, the music, the family gathering -all of this is Holi for a baby.
  • 12–24 months: very gentle natural colour (turmeric in a small amount) on cheeks only, with parent's supervision and the child's clear willingness. Never on face, eyes, or in hair.
  • Apply organic coconut or mustard oil on all exposed skin before any colour contact -creates a protective barrier
  • Baby-safe protective glasses available on Amazon India -consider for any child under 5 attending community Holi
  • After Holi: a gentle, lukewarm bath with mild baby soap. Never scrub -oil removes colour more gently than force

Tip: Make the natural colours with your children the week before Holi -boiling the beetroot, mixing the turmeric. The making is half the festival. Children who made their colour are more careful with how they use it.
