Ganesh Sthapana - Step by Step

Step 1: Prepare the Space

  • Clean puja area thoroughly. Set up the chowki with yellow or red cloth.
  • Decorate backdrop with flowers, marigold garlands, torans, and diyas.
  • Bathe, wear fresh clean clothes - ideally yellow, Ganesha's colour.

Step 2: Avahana - Welcome Ganesha Home

  • Place the idol on the platform, facing east or north.
  • Light the diya and incense. Ring the bell.
  • Chant: 'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah' - 21 times or as many as feels right.

Step 3: Panchamrit Abhishek - The Sacred Bath

  • Pour each over the idol in sequence: Milk (purity) · Curd (prosperity) · Honey (sweetness) · Ghee (strength) · Sugar (joy)
  • Rinse with plain water and pat dry gently with a clean cloth.

Step 4: The 16 Ritual Offerings (Simplified)

Offer in sequence: seat (asana), water for feet, water for hands, sipping water, sacred bath (done), cloth, sacred thread, sandalwood paste, flowers, 21 Durva blades, incense, diya, modak and fruits (naivedya), betel leaf, circumambulation (3 clockwise rounds), and bow.

Step 5: Aarti

Wave a lit camphor diya in clockwise circles before the idol while singing:

Sukhakarta Dukhaharta varta Vighnachi

Nurvi purvi Prem krupa Jayachi...

Distribute prasad - modak and fruit - to everyone present.

Daily Puja Through the Festival

Morning and evening: light a diya, offer a flower, ring the bell. A sincere 'Jai Ganesh' is a complete daily puja. Bappa is pleased by consistency and sincerity, not elaborate ritual.

Visarjan - The Farewell

  • Home Visarjan: fill a large tub with water, lower the clay idol gently while chanting 'Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya'. The clay dissolves naturally. Use the water on plants.
  • Public Visarjan: join the community procession to a designated water body.
  • Allow children to throw flowers as part of the farewell - this participation matters.

Involving Children at Every Step

Step 2 (Avahana): Let them ring the bell as Bappa enters the home

Step 3 (Abhishek): Children can pour the milk and honey - gently, supervised

Step 4 (Offerings): Let them place the Durva grass and flowers

Step 5 (Aarti): Children clap or ring a small bell during the song

Visarjan: Let them throw flowers into the water as their farewell

Never force participation - invite, demonstrate, celebrate when they join
