Fasting During Navratri When You're Pregnant or Breastfeeding - The Honest Guide (2026)

Every year as Navratri approaches, the same question comes up in every mother's group, every family WhatsApp chat: 'Can I fast this Navratri? I'm pregnant / I'm breastfeeding?' The answers from all sides are contradictory.

Every year as Navratri approaches, the same question comes up in every mother's group, every family WhatsApp chat: 'Can I fast this Navratri? I'm pregnant / I'm breastfeeding?' The answers from all sides are contradictory. The doctor says no. The mother-in-law says she fasted through three pregnancies. Your own body is asking to be consulted. This blog gives you the medical guidance, the traditional context, and the middle path that most mothers actually take.

What Medical Science Says

During Pregnancy

  • Complete fasting is NOT recommended by IAP, FOGSI, or mainstream obstetric guidance
  • Blood glucose dips from fasting can affect foetal development - particularly in the first and third trimesters
  • Dehydration - common during fasting - is a risk during pregnancy and can trigger contractions
  • The nutritional restriction of Navratri vrat food (no grains, limited protein) can mean your baby isn't getting adequate nutrition for 9 days
  • Higher risk: first trimester, third trimester, any pregnancy with complications, anaemia, or gestational diabetes

During Breastfeeding

  • Your body can maintain milk production through modest caloric restriction - but quality and quantity may dip if restriction is severe
  • Dehydration significantly affects milk supply - this is the most critical thing to monitor
  • Newborns under 3 months: do not fast - supply is still being established and especially vulnerable
  • Babies 6 months+ eating solids: a gentle modified fast may be manageable with a well-established supply

The Middle Path - What Most Mothers Actually Do

Approach

What It Looks Like

Who It Works For

Full traditional fast

Fruits only, one meal, vrat items only, no grains

Not recommended during pregnancy or early breastfeeding

Modified fast

Vrat foods freely throughout day - sabudana, kuttu, potatoes, curd, fruit

Breastfeeding with established supply; 2nd trimester with doctor's clearance

Satvik diet (no fast)

Normal eating without onion, garlic, meat - clean and devotional

Pregnant women; early breastfeeding; any health concern

No restriction

Eating normally while maintaining puja, prayer, garba, and intention

Completely valid - the fast is one form of devotion, not the only form

If You Choose to Fast - Non-Negotiables

  • Drink minimum 3 litres of water daily - dehydration is the most immediate risk
  • Eat every 2-3 hours - vrat food counts: sabudana, makhana, sweet potato, curd, fruit, nuts
  • Never skip the morning meal - blood glucose management starts at breakfast
  • If you feel dizzy, weak, have a headache, or your baby seems unsettled at feeds - break the fast immediately. No tradition is worth your or your baby's health.
  • Tell your doctor before Navratri: 'I would like to do a modified Navratri fast. What do you recommend?' Get personalised guidance.

A Word on Family Pressure

If you are being pressured by family members to fast when your body or doctor has said otherwise - this is worth addressing directly.

A useful frame: 'My way of honouring Maa Durga this Navratri is keeping myself and my baby healthy. That is also seva. That is also devotion.'

Maa Durga is a mother. She does not ask a mother to harm her child in devotion to her.

The Goddess of protection does not require sacrifice of the very people she protects.
