Discover the meaning of Dahi Handi, its connection with Krishna’s childhood, important dates, and safe ways for children to enjoy this festive tradition.
Dahi Handi is the joyful community tradition of Maharashtra -a clay pot (handi) filled with curd, butter, and milk is hung high above the ground. Human pyramids of young men and boys (Govindas) form to reach and break the pot, recreating Krishna's childhood habit of stealing butter from neighbours' pots hung high on the wall.
In Mumbai and Pune, this has become one of the most theatrical celebrations of the year -60-foot pyramids, celebrity Govindas, prize money, and tens of thousands of spectators.
