Dahi Handi 2027 -How to Celebrate Safely With Children (Maharashtra Guide)

Discover the meaning of Dahi Handi, its connection with Krishna’s childhood, important dates, and safe ways for children to enjoy this festive tradition.

What Is Dahi Handi?

Dahi Handi is the joyful community tradition of Maharashtra -a clay pot (handi) filled with curd, butter, and milk is hung high above the ground. Human pyramids of young men and boys (Govindas) form to reach and break the pot, recreating Krishna's childhood habit of stealing butter from neighbours' pots hung high on the wall.

In Mumbai and Pune, this has become one of the most theatrical celebrations of the year -60-foot pyramids, celebrity Govindas, prize money, and tens of thousands of spectators.

Dahi Handi 2027 Date

Dahi Handi is celebrated on Janmashtami day and the following day

In most of Maharashtra: Thursday, 26 August 2027

In some communities: Wednesday, 25 August 2027

Community Dahi Handi events in Mumbai and Pune begin mid-morning -check local mandal announcements

Safety First -Before Your Child Participates

  • Age minimum: the Maharashtra government guidelines restrict children under 12 from forming human pyramids
  • Children can participate at lower levels (ground level and first tier) with adult supervision
  • The most important safety rule: no child should ever be at the top of a pyramid -the fall risk is significant
  • Helmets and protective padding are available at organised community events -require these before allowing participation
  • Observe first: the first year with a young child, attend as a spectator. Let them absorb the excitement before participation.

Home Dahi Handi -Safe, Joyful, Child-Appropriate

  • Hang a small clay pot at a height reachable by your children with a simple jump or stepping stool
  • Fill with butter, curd, and a few coins
  • Let children form a small, safe 'pyramid' (one child on another's shoulders, parent holding firmly) or simply jump to reach it
  • When the pot breaks: the curd and butter are the prasad -offer first to Krishna, then to the celebrating children
  • This version captures the joy completely without any safety risk

Tip: The spirit of Dahi Handi is community, effort, and the joy of working together. Even a small home version with 3 children teaches all of these.
