8 Satvik Navratri Recipes the Whole Family Will Actually Eat - Fasting-Friendly and Genuinely Delicious (2026)

Navratri fasting food has a reputation - dry, plain, not very exciting. This is unfair to a cuisine that is actually full of flavour, texture, and warmth.

Navratri fasting food has a reputation - dry, plain, not very exciting. This is unfair to a cuisine that is actually full of flavour, texture, and warmth. The restrictions push you into creative territory that produces genuine ly delicious food. Here are 8 recipes that work for the whole family - including children who are not fasting but want what you're eating because it smells good.

Recipe 1: Sabudana Khichdi - The Navratri Staple

Ingredient

Amount

Sabudana (tapioca pearls) - soaked 6-8 hours

1 cup

Roasted peanuts (coarsely crushed)

1/2 cup

Potato, boiled and cubed

1 large

Green chillies, cumin seeds

2-3 chillies, 1 tsp cumin

Sendha namak, lime juice, ghee

To taste, 1 tbsp, 2 tbsp

Fresh coriander and coconut for garnish

As needed

Method:

  • The key: soak sabudana for 6-8 hours in just enough water to cover. They swell but must NOT stick together. Over-soaking = gluey khichdi.
  • Heat ghee. Add cumin and green chillies. Add potato, cook until slightly golden.
  • Add sabudana. Stir gently - do not mash. Cook 5-7 minutes until pearls look slightly translucent.
  • Add peanuts, sendha namak, lime juice, coriander. Toss and serve warm.

Recipe 2: Kuttu ki Puri with Aloo Sabzi

  • Dough: 1 cup kuttu atta + 1 boiled mashed potato + sendha namak + 1 tsp cumin. Knead with minimal water into firm dough. Roll thick, fry in hot oil until puffed and golden.
  • Sabzi: Heat ghee. Add cumin and ginger. Add boiled cubed potatoes. Season with sendha namak, red chilli, coriander, amchur. Cook 5 minutes. Garnish with coriander.

Recipe 4: Rajgira Paratha (Amaranth Flatbread)

  • 1 cup rajgira flour + boiled mashed potato + sendha namak + ajwain + ghee to bind.
  • Knead into soft dough. Roll carefully (rajgira is delicate). Cook on tawa with ghee on both sides.
  • Fills you up for hours - better than kuttu for sustained energy.

Recipe 5: Singhada Halwa

  • 1 cup singhada atta roasted in 4 tbsp ghee on LOW heat, 10 minutes, until fragrant.
  • Add 2.5 cups warm water carefully (will sizzle). Stir constantly to prevent lumps.
