7 Conversations to Have with Your Teen About Social Media

Social Media bans relate to your poor mental health. Giving social media without conversation can negatively impact your mental health too.

Social Media bans relate to your poor mental health. Giving social media without conversation can negatively impact your mental health too. Your social media is critical to your mental health, so that comes from ongoing, honest talk.

Keep The Questions Coming

  • "What do you love about your favorite apps?” – Responding curiously, not judgmentally, will keep your kid talking.
  • "Have you ever felt bad about yourself after seeing something online?” – This question will help you discuss the effects of comparison culture.
  • "Do you know people edit what they post online to look perfect?” – Talk about posting things in stages through videos, editing, and filters. Be specific and don’t lecture.
  • "What would you do if someone hurt your feelings online?” – Discuss what to do in the situation beforehand.
  • “If you ever feel uncomfortable, you can always tell me.” – Although this has a more serious tone, it helps your kid feel safe talking to you.
  • "What is the most outrageous thing you have seen online?” – This makes it feel more light-hearted and with your kids helps give them what they call humor.
  • "How do you feel about your own personal screen time?” – They should answer themselves.

Your goal should always be to regularly check in about the conversations you have with your kids being so serious, and this should be somewhat regularly, multiple times spread out through the year.

Which of these are you going to try out this week?
