Reading to your baby before they can understand words is not pointless. It is one of the most developmental things you can do.
Reading to your baby before they can understand words is not pointless. It is one of the most developmental things you can do.
When you read to a baby, they hear vocabulary, tone, rhythm, and the back-and-forth of language. They see you engaged, your face expressive, your voice changing. They learn that books are interesting, that pages turn, that stories are worth attending to. The habit of reading - built in infancy - is one of the strongest predictors of literacy and academic performance.
And yet most Indian families read to children in English, from books featuring characters who look nothing like them, living in environments that bear no resemblance to Indian homes. Bilingual books and Indian-character books change this. Here's what to put on the shelf.

Tip: Keep books within your baby's reach at floor level - a small forward-facing shelf or even books in a basket that baby can access independently encourages self-directed 'reading' from very early.
