Setting Boundaries This Ganesh Chaturthi - A Guide for Indian Parents Who Are Done Doing It All (2026)

Every year it goes the same way. You said you'd keep it small. You said you'd take help. You said you wouldn't take on everything alone.

Every year it goes the same way. You said you'd keep it small. You said you'd take help. You said you wouldn't take on everything alone. And every year, somehow, you're the one awake at midnight before Ganesh Chaturthi rolling modak dough with one hand and answering guests' requests with the other.

This blog is not about doing Ganesh Chaturthi differently. It's about being honest about what the festival costs - and making some decisions in advance so that cost is shared.

Why Boundaries Feel So Hard During Indian Festivals

Indian festivals are communal by nature. The entire point of Ganesh Chaturthi - as Bal Gangadhar Tilak intended it - is community. Coming together. Serving together. The difficulty is that in most Indian families, 'coming together' still means specific people doing most of the work. And the culture around festivals makes saying 'I can't do this' feel like saying 'I don't care about the family' - which is never true.

A boundary is not a rejection of Ganesha. It is a protection of the person who does all the celebrating.

5 Boundaries Worth Setting - And How to Say Them

1. The Guest List

'We are keeping Chaturthi to immediate family this year.' You do not need to justify this. You can add: 'Everyone is welcome for the aarti' - that is a generous offering without the full burden of hosting extended family for multiple days.

2. The Duration

'We are doing 1.5 day Visarjan this year.' This is not a lesser celebration. It is the version most Mumbai families follow. Tradition and duration are not the same thing.

3. The Division of Work

'I need help with the cooking this year. Can you bring the shrikhand on the morning of the 14th?' Name it specifically. 'Help me' gets vague offers. A specific ask gets results.

4. Unsolicited Advice About How You're Doing Things

'Thank you - we're happy with how we've planned it this year.' A complete sentence that closes the conversation without confrontation. Repeat as needed.

5. Your Own Rest

'I'm going to rest for an hour after lunch - please help yourselves to tea.' This is the hardest one for Indian mothers to say. Say it anyway. A rested host is a present host. An exhausted host is running on resentment by Day 2.

What Ganesha Actually Asks For

Lord Ganesha is the remover of obstacles - but he also represents wisdom. And wisdom says: do not perform devotion in a way that depletes the devotee. A Ganesh Chaturthi where you are present, joyful, and genuinely connected to the ritual is worth more than one where the aarti tray is perfectly polished and you are silently seething through it.

Bappa, who loves his devotees, would prefer you at peace.

For the Partner of the Person Reading This

If your partner runs the Ganesh Chaturthi show every year - the planning, the cooking, the cleaning, the hosting - please read this.

Ask them: 'What can I take off your list this year?' And then do it. Without being asked again. Without waiting to be told how.

That is also seva. That is also devotion. That is Ganesha showing up in the form of a helpful partner.

The festival becomes genuinely beautiful when the work is genuinely shared.

Tip: Write down your non-negotiables before the festival season begins: what you will do, what you will not do, and what help you need. Having it on paper makes it easier to hold to - and to communicate.
