How to Do Raksha Bandhan Puja at Home -The Complete Ritual Guide for Every Family (2027)

A complete Raksha Bandhan 2027 puja guide covering tilak, aarti, Rakhi tying, sweets, gifts, muhurat, and meaningful family traditions at home.

The Rakhi tying ceremony is brief -perhaps 10 minutes -but within it sits the entire meaning of the festival. A tilak applied with care. A thread tied with intention. A promise made in front of the family. A sweet shared.

Here is the complete guide -from the muhurat to the final aarti -so that every step feels known and meaningful.

Muhurat 2027

Date: Tuesday, 17 August 2027

Rakhi must be tied during the auspicious period -AFTER Bhadra Kaal has passed

Bhadra Kaal: an inauspicious period that falls on Purnima. Check Drikpanchang.com for exact Bhadra end time for your city

In most years, the auspicious afternoon window is approximately 1:30 PM – sunset

If Bhadra extends past sunset, some traditions allow tying the Rakhi in the evening after it ends

The Ritual -Step by Step

Step 1: Preparation (Morning)

  • Both siblings bathe and wear new or clean, fresh clothes -preferably ethnic wear
  • The sister prepares the puja thali: arrange diya, kumkum, akshat, Rakhi, mithai, and flowers
  • Light the diya on the thali before beginning the ceremony

Step 2: Tilak

  • The brother sits facing east (or north)
  • The sister dips her ring finger in kumkum and draws a tilak on her brother's forehead -the tilak is an auspicious mark, a blessing
  • She then places a few grains of akshat (red-tinted rice) on the tilak

Step 3: Aarti

  • The sister performs aarti -waving the lit diya in a clockwise circle before her brother's face three times
  • This is a blessing -the same aarti performed for deities, now offered to the brother as an act of love and protection

Step 4: Tying the Rakhi

  • The brother extends his right hand, palm facing down
  • The sister ties the Rakhi on his right wrist -not so tight it cuts, not so loose it slides off
  • While tying, she may chant: 'Yena baddho Bali Raja, Daanvendra Mahaabalah, Tena twam anubadhnaami, Rakshe maa chala maa chala' -the traditional Sanskrit verse. Or simply offer a prayer from the heart.

Step 5: Feeding the Sweet

  • The sister feeds the first piece of mithai to her brother with her hand
  • He accepts it -this is the sweetness of the bond made tangible

Step 6: The Gift and the Promise

  • The brother gives his gift -whatever he has chosen
  • More important than the gift: the promise. 'I will be there for you this year. You can call me anytime.' Spoken out loud, even briefly, gives the ritual its heart.

When Siblings Are in Different Cities

  • The Rakhi is mailed or couriered -order well in advance as Rakhi season post offices are overwhelmed
  • A video call ceremony -sister ties Rakhi to her own wrist while on call, brother applies his own tilak -is entirely valid and increasingly common
  • Some families mail a small mithai box alongside the Rakhi so the sweet exchange can still happen

Tip: When tying the Rakhi, slow the moment down. Look at each other. Say something. The 10-second rush-tie is not the same as a 2-minute moment of genuine attention and love.

What is the most memorable thing your brother has ever said when you tied his Rakhi?
