The heart of Navratri puja is simple: you are welcoming the Divine Mother into your home for nine nights. Everything else - the flowers, the lamp, the fasting, the recitation - is how you say: I am ready for you. I have made my home ready. Come.

Ghatasthapana Muhurat 2026

Date: Sunday, 11 October 2026

Ghatasthapana is performed in the first one-third of the day - early morning preferred

Abhijit Muhurat (most auspicious): check your local panchang for exact timing by city

Navratri must begin with Ghatasthapana on Day 1 - it cannot be performed on subsequent days

Ghatasthapana - What You Need and the Steps

Items Required

  • Clay or copper kalash (pot)
  • Clean water to fill the kalash
  • Mango leaves - 5 or 7 - to place around the mouth
  • Unbroken coconut (with coir) to place on top
  • Barley seeds (jau) - soaked overnight, to be sown in soil inside the kalash
  • A clay pot of moist soil for the barley sprouts
  • Red thread (mauli) to tie around the kalash
  • Kumkum, haldi, flowers for the kalash offering
  • Image or idol of Maa Durga on a raised red-cloth platform

The Steps

1. Clean the puja space. Lay a red cloth on the platform.

2. Place the clay pot of moist soil. Sow barley seeds in it - these sprout through the nine days, a living symbol of growth.

3. Fill the kalash with clean water. Place 5 mango leaves around the rim, tips pointing inward.

4. Apply kumkum and haldi to the kalash. Tie red thread around the neck.

5. Place the coconut on top - it represents the divine, the Goddess herself.

6. Set the kalash on the sown earth. Place the image of Maa Durga behind it.

7. Light the diya and incense. Ring the bell.

8. Chant: 'Om Dum Durgaye Namah' - 21 times or as many as feels right.

9. Offer flowers, kumkum, haldi, and Durva to the Goddess.

10. Recite Durga Chalisa or simply offer a sincere prayer of welcome.

The Akhand Jyoti - The Continuous Flame

Many families maintain a lamp burning continuously for nine days. It is a powerful symbol: the divine light, once invited in, does not go out. If a continuous flame feels unsafe with children, a deepak lit at every puja is equally valid. The intention matters more than the duration.

Daily Navratri Puja - The Simplified Version

Every morning and evening for nine days:

1. Bathe and wear clean clothes

2. Light the diya and incense

3. Offer fresh flowers to the Goddess

4. Water the barley seeds

5. Recite Durga Chalisa or 'Om Dum Durgaye Namah' - 108 times if possible

6. Perform aarti: 'Jai Ambe Gauri' - sing or play a recording

7. Distribute prasad - fruit, coconut, or whatever has been offered that day

Kanya Puja - Saturday, 17 October 2026 (Ashtami)

One of the most beautiful rituals of Navratri - and one children love to participate in from both sides.

  • Invite 9 girls between ages 2-10 from your building, neighbourhood, or family
  • Wash their feet with warm water. Apply kumkum tilak to their foreheads.
  • Offer them halwa, puri, and kala chana - the traditional Kanya Puja meal.
  • Give small gifts: dupatta, bangles, hair accessories, books, or stationery.
  • Touch their feet and take their blessings - we acknowledge the Goddess in every girl child.

The Kanya Puja is most meaningful to children when they are both the participants (their sisters or neighbours being worshipped) and the servers (helping offer the halwa and gifts). Both sides of the ritual teach something essential.
