Ganesh Sthapana - Step by Step
Step 1: Prepare the Space
- Clean puja area thoroughly. Set up the chowki with yellow or red cloth.
- Decorate backdrop with flowers, marigold garlands, torans, and diyas.
- Bathe, wear fresh clean clothes - ideally yellow, Ganesha's colour.
Step 2: Avahana - Welcome Ganesha Home
- Place the idol on the platform, facing east or north.
- Light the diya and incense. Ring the bell.
- Chant: 'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah' - 21 times or as many as feels right.
Step 3: Panchamrit Abhishek - The Sacred Bath
- Pour each over the idol in sequence: Milk (purity) · Curd (prosperity) · Honey (sweetness) · Ghee (strength) · Sugar (joy)
- Rinse with plain water and pat dry gently with a clean cloth.
Step 4: The 16 Ritual Offerings (Simplified)
Offer in sequence: seat (asana), water for feet, water for hands, sipping water, sacred bath (done), cloth, sacred thread, sandalwood paste, flowers, 21 Durva blades, incense, diya, modak and fruits (naivedya), betel leaf, circumambulation (3 clockwise rounds), and bow.
