The weeks before Bappa arrives - the idol shopping, the decoration planning, the making of modak - these are not chores. They are rituals. But they also require planning. The best clay idols sell out. The decoration items you want won't be in shops 3 days before. This checklist organises all of it week by week.

The Idol: Order Now, Not on 10 September
- Choose shadu mati (natural clay) - biodegradable, safe for water bodies, more beautiful in natural form than PoP
- Avoid Plaster of Paris - does not dissolve in water, releases toxic chemicals during immersion
- Size: 8-18 inches for home puja is ideal. Larger idols are heavy to carry and harder to immerse
- If buying online: allow 10-14 days for shipping - order this week
- Home Visarjan option: a clay idol dissolves in a large tub at home - the water can go to your plants
- If hiring a decorator for the makhar: book this week - good decorators are fully booked by September

1 WEEK BEFORE - Week of 7 September 2026
The Safai - Deep Clean
- Deep-clean the puja room or corner first - the most important space in the home
- Declutter: remove anything no longer needed. Festivals are the best time for this.
- Clean and wash all copper and brass puja vessels from previous years
- Prepare the rangoli space near the entrance
Family and Food Planning
- Confirm with family: who is coming, how many days, staying or visiting?
- Decide prasad offerings for each day - modak on Day 1, fruit daily, shrikhand-puri for Visarjan
- Order gift boxes, dry fruit boxes, or return prasad pudi if gifting guests
DAY BEFORE - 13 September 2026
- Set up the makhar/decoration backdrop - the evening before, not morning of
- Draw rangoli at the entrance - marigold petals and colours
- Prepare modak dough and filling if making fresh tomorrow
- Arrange all puja samagri on a tray in the sequence you'll need it
- Rest. Sthapana day starts early and is a long, beautiful, full day.
