Every year, after the celebration ends, what's left behind matters as much as what happened during it. Thousands of Plaster of Paris Ganesha idols immersed each Ganesh Chaturthi don't dissolve. They break into pieces and leach sulphur, phosphorus, magnesium, and artificial paint chemicals into rivers and lakes that communities depend on.
Choosing a clay idol is not anti-tradition. Clay is the oldest tradition. The shift to PoP happened only in the mid-20th century as a cheaper, faster alternative. Returning to clay is returning to the original.
