8 Easy Modak and Ganesh Chaturthi Sweet Recipes Your Kids Can Help Make (2026)

Modak is not just a sweet. It is Ganesha's favourite food - the most offered prasad during Ganesh Chaturthi. 'Moda' means joy, 'ka' means a small piece.

Modak is not just a sweet. It is Ganesha's favourite food - the most offered prasad during Ganesh Chaturthi. 'Moda' means joy, 'ka' means a small piece. A small piece of joy. Making modak fills the kitchen with smell, sound, and love. It's also the activity children remember most - the floury hands, the shaping, the stealing of filling before it goes in.

Recipe 1: Ukadiche Modak - The Traditional Steamed Original

For the Dough

For the Filling

1 cup fine rice flour (ladoo rice flour)

1 cup freshly grated coconut

1 cup water

3/4 cup grated jaggery

1/2 tsp ghee, pinch of salt

1/4 tsp cardamom, pinch of nutmeg

Method:

  • Filling first: Heat jaggery in pan on low until melted. Add coconut, stir until mixture leaves sides of pan (5-7 min). Add cardamom. Cool completely.
  • Dough: Boil water with ghee and salt. Add rice flour all at once, stir vigorously off heat until smooth. Cover, rest 5 minutes.
  • Shape: Take a golf-ball-sized dough piece. Flatten to a disc, place 1 tsp filling in centre, pleat edges upward and pinch to seal at the top.
  • Steam: 10-12 minutes. The modak will look slightly translucent when done.
  • Offer 21 to Lord Ganesha before anyone eats. The rest goes to everyone who helped make them.

Recipe 2: Talniche Modak - Fried Modak

  • Cover: 1 cup maida + 2 tbsp ghee + pinch salt + water to bind into firm dough. Rest 30 minutes.
  • Filling: Mix grated coconut, powdered jaggery, and cardamom - cold, no cooking needed.
  • Stuff and seal into modak shape, pinch firmly. Deep fry on medium until golden.

Recipe 3: Chocolate Modak - The Kids' Favourite (No Cooking!)

Ingredients: 200g dark or milk chocolate, 2 tbsp fresh cream, 2 tbsp desiccated coconut, pinch cardamom

Method: Melt chocolate with cream in a double boiler. Mix in coconut and cardamom.

Pour into a modak mould or shape by hand while warm. Refrigerate 30 minutes.

Children can make this independently from age 7. Ready in 20 minutes.

Recipe 4: Coconut Ladoo - 4 Ingredients, 10 Minutes

  • 2 cups desiccated coconut + 1/2 cup condensed milk + 1/4 tsp cardamom + pinch saffron
  • Mix in a bowl. Shape into balls. Roll in extra coconut. Refrigerate 2 hours before offering.

Recipe 5: Besan Ladoo - The Classic Prasad

  • Roast 2 cups besan in 1/2 cup ghee on LOW heat - 15-20 minutes until deeply golden and fragrant. Do not rush.
  • Cool 5 minutes. Add 1.5 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp cardamom, chopped cashews and raisins.
  • Shape into balls while still warm - too cool and they won't bind.

Recipe 6: Puran Poli - The Festival Bread

  • Puran (filling): Cook chana dal until soft, drain, mix with jaggery and cook until thick. Add cardamom and nutmeg.
  • Dough: Soft wheat dough with a pinch of turmeric and oil.
  • Stuff and roll thin. Cook on tawa with generous ghee until golden both sides.
  • Serve warm with extra ghee poured on top and warm milk on the side.

Recipe 7: Shrikhand - Made the Night Before

  • Hang 500g full-fat curd in a muslin cloth overnight to drain whey completely.
  • Whisk thick curd with 3-4 tbsp powdered sugar, pinch saffron dissolved in 1 tbsp warm milk, 1/4 tsp cardamom.
  • Stir in chopped almonds and pistachios. Refrigerate until serving.

Recipe 8: Panchamrit - The Sacred Offering You Also Get to Drink

  • Mix: 1/4 cup whole milk + 2 tbsp fresh curd + 1 tsp raw honey + 1 tsp pure ghee + 1 tsp sugar. Stir gently.
  • Offer to the idol during abhishek, then distribute as prasad. Every drop is auspicious.

Which Recipes Can Children Make at Which Age?

Ages 6-9: Chocolate modak independently, coconut ladoo, simple filling mixing

Ages 10+: Assisted fried modak, besan ladoo with supervision, shrikhand whisking

Ages 14+: Full ukadiche modak with guidance, puran poli with practice

Rule: every child who helps make the prasad gets first pick of the finished result
