Indian babies need sunscreen. This is the most underappreciated fact in Indian baby skincare - and the one that has the greatest long-term impact on skin health.
UV exposure in India is among the highest in the world year-round. Indian skin, despite higher melanin content, is not immune to UV damage. Melanin provides only SPF 8-13 equivalent natural protection. A 45-minute outdoor outing requires significantly more than that.
And yet most Indian parents don't apply sunscreen to their babies - either because they assume Indian skin doesn't need it, or because they're not sure which product is safe. Here's the honest guide.

IAP Guideline on Baby SunscreenUnder 6 months: No topical sunscreen. Use physical protection instead - shade, clothing, hat, pram cover. Baby skin is too thin and absorptive for topical products. 6 months to 2 years: Mineral-based SPF 30-50 only. Apply 15-20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors. 2 years+: Mineral or hybrid SPF 50. Daily use if outdoors. Year-round in India: UV index is high even in winter and monsoon. 'Cloud cover' does not equal UV protection - up to 80% of UV penetrates cloud cover. |

The best combination of safety, availability, price, and SPF protection in India. Himalaya is one of the most trusted Indian brands, their baby line is extensively tested, and at under ₹250 for SPF 50 PA++++, this is exceptional value.
Honest caveat: Some babies with extremely reactive skin may respond better to a single-zinc-oxide mineral sunscreen like Little Rituals or Sebamed. For most Indian babies with healthy skin, this is all you need.
Verdict: Best everyday sunscreen for Indian babies 6 months+. The Himalaya name, the SPF 50 PA++++ rating, and the price make this the most accessible choice for the largest number of Indian families.
The same pH 5.5 philosophy that makes Sebamed's body wash exceptional applies here. If your baby has eczema, atopic dermatitis, or consistently reactive skin - this is the safest sunscreen formulation available in India.
Verdict: Best for babies with sensitive, eczema-prone, or reactive skin. The higher price is justified if skin reactions are a concern.
An Indian D2C brand specifically solving the 'white cast' problem that was the biggest complaint about mineral sunscreens. Little Rituals uses Swiss technology with zinc oxide but formulates it to disperse without leaving the chalky residue most mineral sunscreens leave on Indian skin.
Verdict: Best when white cast is your primary concern. Particularly recommended for older toddlers and children who resist applying sunscreen due to the 'ghostly' look of older mineral formulas.
How to Apply Sunscreen on a Baby Who Hates ItApply before getting dressed - easier to cover the whole body systematically Make it part of the dressing routine so it feels normal, not 'extra' Apply 15-20 minutes before going outside - mineral sunscreens are effective immediately but benefit from settling time Reapply every 2 hours of outdoor time, or after water play/sweating Don't forget: ears, back of neck, tops of feet, back of hands Amount: about 2 tablespoons for the whole body. Most parents apply too little, which significantly reduces effective SPF |

Tip: Buy two tubes of sunscreen: keep one at home and one in your diaper bag or car. You will forget to apply it when it's not immediately accessible.
