7 Mindfulness Rituals the Whole Family Can Do Together

Mindfulness can often be misperceived as being really time-consuming, but getting out of the mind and into the moment really is all it takes.

Mindfulness can often be misperceived as being really time-consuming, but getting out of the mind and into the moment really is all it takes. These seven rituals are adaptable so that four-year-olds and teenagers can both participate.

Starting Small

  • Guests at the dining table take turns saying what they are thankful for before digging in. Takes about 2 minutes and shifts the tone of the meal.
  • Family members set an intention for the day with one word. For example, 'focused', 'calm', 'brave'.
  • An excellent grounding exercise for anxious kids is this. Identify 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, 1 thing you can taste.
  • All ages can appreciate this one. Hands resting on the belly, a minute of slow, deep breaths in and out.
  • Each week, walk in nature for 5 minutes without talking and just pay attention to the world around you. What is the wind doing? What color is that leaf?
  • Good, memorable, and challenging are the things to be written about in this journal.
  • Add good memories to the thankful jar. Sunday evenings are the best time to read them.

Adding rituals as part of your family routines is a great idea. Focus on making one ritual a part of your regular routines before you introduce another.

What ritual are you beginning this weekend?
