Explore the story of Krishna’s birth, Janmashtami traditions, and meaningful lessons about courage, joy, wisdom, love, and equality for children.
Lord Krishna was born at midnight -at the darkest hour, when the world outside was stormy and the guards were sleeping, when everything that should have prevented the birth was present. And yet the birth happened. The light arrived on time.
Janmashtami celebrates this birth. But more than any other Hindu festival, it also celebrates a life -because Krishna's life, from his childhood mischief in Vrindavan to his wisdom on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, offers parents and children an inexhaustible source of stories, lessons, and conversations.

For Young Children (Ages 3–7)
Long ago, a wicked king named Kansa was told that the eighth child of his sister Devaki would end his rule. Kansa imprisoned his sister and her husband Vasudeva and took away each of their children as they were born.
When the eighth child -Lord Krishna -was born at midnight, something miraculous happened. The prison guards fell asleep. The chains on Vasudeva's hands fell away. The heavy prison doors opened by themselves. And Vasudeva carried the newborn Krishna across the flooding Yamuna river in a basket -the river parted to let them through, and a great serpent spread its hood to protect the baby from the rain.
Vasudeva placed Krishna in the home of Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul -and came back with their daughter. The next morning, Kansa came to take the baby and found a girl child instead -who warned him that his destroyer was already alive and safe.
And so began the life of Lord Krishna -protected from birth, raised in love, destined to change everything.
For Older Children (Ages 8–14) -What Krishna Teaches
|
Krishna's Quality |
The Story |
What It Teaches |
|
Joy and playfulness |
As a child, he stole butter from the neighbours, played his flute for hours, danced with his friends |
Joy is not frivolous -it is an expression of the divine |
|
Courage |
Killed the demon Putana as a baby, defeated the serpent Kaliya as a child |
Courage can come in unexpected forms -even from the smallest |
|
Wisdom |
Delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra |
Right action, without attachment to outcome, is the foundation of a good life |
|
Equality |
He moved equally among cowherd children and kings, giving equal love to all |
The divine sees no hierarchy. Neither should we. |
|
Love |
His relationship with Radha -not of possession but of pure, unconditional devotion |
The highest form of love releases rather than holds |
Krishna's flute is one of the most potent symbols in Hindu philosophy. The flute is hollow -it makes music only because it is empty. When you empty yourself of ego, of attachment, of the need to control -the divine can play music through you.
For children: 'When Krishna plays his flute, everyone and everything stops to listen. That's what happens when we are truly peaceful inside -the world responds to us differently.'
