5 Ways to Raise an Emotionally Intelligent Child

IQ gets children into rooms, but EQ gets them through the doors. Emotional intelligence is a learned trait, and the best place to learn is at home in the small moments throughout the day.

IQ gets children into rooms, but EQ gets them through the doors. Emotional intelligence is a learned trait, and the best place to learn is at home in the small moments throughout the day.

5 Practices That Build EQ

  • Provide an emotional label for yourself and for them. “You seem really frustrated” or “I’m really disappointed” are examples. Labeling an emotion is the primary building block of EQ.
  • Recognize their feelings before attempting a “fix.” Instead of offering a solution with “here’s what you should do,” start with “That sounds really hard.” This shows your child the feelings are strong but can be managed.
  • Allow them to experience feeling bad. Feelings like disappointment and frustration can be managed and don’t need a quick escape.
  • Ask them to consider how someone else may be feeling. Start with a specific example and ask them to consider how the person may be feeling.
  • After you have calmed down, be sure to offer an apology for your outburst. This teaches your child that emotions are manageable and an apology clears the air.

EQ develops over many of these small experiences and is not the result of a single conversation. Start now, with one moment.

Which are you already doing?
